It was an act of Whimsy......
The kindness of strangers

So today like a lot of people, I was overwhelmed with emotion.  I’ve been with my girlfriend for 8 years and we have been through so much.  We’ve been together longer than many of my straight friends and relatives and most people are surprised that we have been together for so long.  It’s like lesbians settling down are the Loch Ness Monster.  Apparently, we don’t exist.

A few years ago Tracy (my gf) had a life threatening illness where they had to put her in a medically induced coma.  Even though she is estranged from her parents, they were allowed to make medical decisions for her over the telephone instead of me.  I had been with her for 5 years at that point.  We had a house, cars, joint bank accounts, but what we didn’t have was a piece of paper saying our love was legal.  I was also barred from being told medically relevant information and forced to leave when visiting hours ended.  One night, she threw a clot and they had to revive her.  I didn’t find that out till the next morning.  She could have died and no one had a legal obligation to tell me.  The entire experience was hell.

Today, Tracy and I decided to celebrate the rulings by going to a nice lunch.  In the restaurant, we discussed the ruling at length and talked about the hospital visit drama and how maybe we should have a ceremony now.

A woman asked us how long we had been together.  When she found out 8 years, she told us we were beautiful and she could tell we were so full of love that she couldn’t understand how anyone could think it was wrong.  She shook our hands and left.

When it came time to pay the bill, the waitress told us that it had been taken care of.  She also handed us a $100 bill.  Written on it were the words: ‘It matters not who you love, where you love, why you love, when you love or how you love, it matters only that you love.  Good luck on your marriage. You will both make beautiful brides.’

I have no words right now.
